Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate markup percentage?

Markup % = (selling price - cost) / cost x 100. If an item costs 800 and sells for 1,000, profit is 200 and markup is 200 / 800 x 100 = 25%. Choose the Cost + Price tab, enter both values, and the tool also shows the margin.

What is the difference between markup and margin?

Markup is profit divided by cost, while margin is profit divided by selling price. A 25% markup on 800 gives a price of 1,000 and a margin of 20%. Margin is always smaller than markup for the same profit, which is why the two are often confused.

How do I convert a margin percentage to a markup percentage?

Markup = margin / (100 - margin) x 100. A 20% margin gives 20 / 80 = 25% markup, and a 50% margin gives 100% markup. The tool does this for you in the Cost + Margin tab, where you enter the cost and target margin.

How do I find the selling price from cost and markup?

Selling price = cost x (1 + markup / 100). At a cost of 800 and markup of 25%, the price is 800 x 1.25 = 1,000. Use the Cost + Markup % tab to get the price, profit and the matching margin.

Why can margin not be 100% or more?

Margin is profit as a share of price, and profit is always smaller than the price when there is a cost. A 100% margin would need a cost of zero, so the calculator rejects margins at or above 100%. Markup has no such limit.

Should I price my products on markup or margin?

Either can work, but be consistent. Retail and trading businesses often set prices by markup on cost, while finance teams and investors usually report margin. Use the tool to translate between them, and remember that overheads are not part of either figure here.

Is my data shared when using the Markup Calculator?

No. Toolskyt operates under a zero-server policy. All calculations, data formatting, and file exports are executed locally on your machine.

Do I need to sign up or pay to use the Markup Calculator?

No, this tool is 100% free. There are no limits, sign-ups, subscriptions, or hidden charges required.
