Text Diff

Compare two drafts word by word, highlight every edit and merge the ones you want

Text Diff compares two versions of a document the way an editor reviews tracked changes. Lines are aligned with the same algorithm Git uses, then the added, removed and reworded words inside each line are highlighted. You can accept or reject each change, undo any step and copy the merged text, all without uploading anything.

How to use Text Diff

  1. Add both versions. Paste or drop the original on the left and the revised text on the right.
  2. Compare. Press Compare (Ctrl/Cmd+Enter) to align the texts and highlight every change.
  3. Review and merge. Step through changes and choose Keep Original, Keep Revised or Keep both.
  4. Export. Copy or download the merged text once every change is resolved.

Features

  • Side-by-side or unified view with aligned lines and word or character highlights.

Why use this tool

  • Private by design: documents are compared in your browser and never uploaded.

Frequently asked questions

How do I compare two texts and see the differences?

Paste the original on the left and the revised version on the right, then press Compare. Lines that match are lined up side by side, and within changed lines the words that were added, removed or reworded are highlighted, so you can review an edit the way you would with tracked changes.

Does this tool compare by line or by word?

It aligns the texts line by line, then highlights the changed words inside each line. Switch to Chars to see single-letter edits such as typos or punctuation. Inserted or deleted lines are detected properly, so one new line does not make the rest of the text look changed.

Can I accept or reject individual changes?

Yes. Select a change and choose Keep Original, Keep Revised or Keep both, or use the arrows in the middle gutter. Both sides update instantly, and Undo, Redo and Reset let you change your mind. When every change is resolved, copy or download the merged text.

Is whitespace or letter case ignored when comparing?

Only if you want it to be. Turn on Ignore whitespace to skip differences in spacing and indentation, and Ignore case to treat capital and small letters as the same. Both are off by default so that every edit is visible.

What do the red and green highlights mean?

Red marks text that exists only in the original, so it was removed or replaced. Green marks text that exists only in the revised version, so it was added. Striped grey space shows where a line exists on one side only, keeping the two columns aligned.

Can I compare long documents?

Yes. The panes are sized like an A4 page and scroll, and very long texts automatically hide long runs of unchanged lines so you only see the edits. Click a folded section to expand it, or turn off Only changes to see everything.

Is my data shared when using the Text Diff?

No. Toolskyt operates under a zero-server policy. All calculations, data formatting, and file exports are executed locally on your machine.

Do I need to sign up or pay to use the Text Diff?

No, this tool is 100% free. There are no limits, sign-ups, subscriptions, or hidden charges required.
