Generate URL-friendly slugs from any text
Slug Generator is an offline text processor designed to generate url-friendly slugs from any text. Analyze word frequencies, highlight character differentials, or edit markdown documents instantly.
A slug is the readable last part of a web address that identifies a page, such as 'best-pizza-recipes' in example.com/blog/best-pizza-recipes. It is normally lowercase, uses hyphens between words and avoids spaces and symbols so the link is easy to read, share and type.
Paste your title into Source Text. With the default options it lowercases the text, replaces spaces with hyphens and strips special characters. 'Learn React TypeScript in 2026! @Productivity' becomes 'learn-react-typescript-in-2026-productivity'. Then press Copy Slug.
Hyphens are the usual choice. Google recommends hyphens for separating words in URLs because it treats them as word separators, whereas underscores can join words together. This tool converts spaces to hyphens, though it leaves any underscores you typed in place.
With Remove Special Characters on, only letters A to Z, digits, hyphens and underscores are kept. Accented and non-Latin letters are removed rather than transliterated, so 'café' becomes 'caf'. Type the plain version yourself, such as 'cafe', before generating.
Convert to Lowercase makes every letter lowercase. Remove Special Characters strips punctuation and symbols. Replace Spaces turns whitespace into single hyphens and trims hyphens from the ends. Turning Replace Spaces off leaves spaces in the output, which is usually not what a URL needs.
Aim for a few meaningful words, roughly 3 to 6, that describe the page. Short slugs are easier to read and share, and shorter URLs are less likely to be cut off in results. There is no strict limit, but drop filler words like the, and and of where the meaning stays clear.
