Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate mean, median and mode?

Mean is the sum divided by the count, median is the middle value when sorted, and mode is the most frequent value. For 12, 15, 15, 18, 21, 24, 24, 24, 30: sum 183, mean 20.33, median 21, mode 24. Paste your numbers and the tool shows all three.

What is the difference between sample and population standard deviation?

Population standard deviation divides the squared deviations by n, and sample standard deviation divides by n - 1. For the example data set, they are 5.44 and 5.77. Use the sample version when your data is a subset of a larger group, and population when you have every value.

How are quartiles Q1 and Q3 calculated?

The tool sorts the data and uses linear interpolation between neighbouring values at the 25% and 75% positions. Textbooks and some software use other quartile methods, so Q1 and Q3 can differ slightly from your class notes. The median is the same in every method.

What if my data set has no mode?

If every value appears only once, there is no mode and the tool shows None. If several values tie for the highest frequency, all of them are listed. A data set can therefore have no mode, one mode or several.

How do I enter my data?

Type or paste numbers separated by commas, spaces or new lines, for example straight from a spreadsheet column. Anything that is not a number is ignored and listed in a warning. Results update as you type, and no upload is needed.

What is the difference between mean and median?

The mean is the arithmetic average and is pulled by extreme values, while the median is the middle value and resists outliers. In 1, 2, 3, 4, 100 the mean is 22 but the median is 3. Compare both to see whether your data is skewed.

Is my data shared when using the Statistics Calculator?

No. Toolskyt operates under a zero-server policy. All calculations, data formatting, and file exports are executed locally on your machine.

Do I need to sign up or pay to use the Statistics Calculator?

No, this tool is 100% free. There are no limits, sign-ups, subscriptions, or hidden charges required.
